Pillar 1 - Physical Health

Now is the time to begin your path to physical health. Every time you exercise, every time you improve in the food you eat, note it. Record it. This is the time to put your health first and strengthen all areas you have control over. Give a summary of your successes, challenges or failures in your journal entry on the Physical Health pillar. As appropriate, begin a new eating plan, try out a new exercise system, or maintain whatever plan you are already on. Each day you complete this Pillar counts as 1 hour toward your goal of becoming an FP-Master.

Our bodies are our gardens – our wills are our gardeners - William Shakespeare.

Pillar 2 - Mental Growth

Now is the time to begin your path to mental growth. No Pillar is more important than any other, but you could make an argument that the Mental Growth Pillar is a focal point on the Five Pillars Path. Feel free to choose anything to read, watch or study that you feel contributes to your well-being. This Pillar could be accomplished by simply learning something new that helps you succeed in your line of work. Or it could be by reading holy works from your chosen faith. This Pillar is very broad and is meant to be so. This is about finding subjects that interest you and enrich your life. As your mind expands while learning new things, record the highlights in your official journal entry. Do not be embarrassed to share your insights, hopes and dreams or what challenges your thinking. This is your personal journal. This is your chance to share what matters most to you. If you would like suggestions on books to study, check out the Library page, and click on the Studies link to see a list of books to get you started on the path to mental growth (even if you disagree with what you read). Each day you complete this Pillar counts as 1 hour toward your goal of becoming an FP-Master.

In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you - Mortimer J Adler.

Pillar 3 - Emotional Peace

Begin a path to emotional well-being. Every time you meditate or pray, record it. Every time you recognize the positive change coming over you internally, note it. Meditation or prayers are powerful practices that can further strengthen your resolve to improve in all areas you choose to focus on. Even just 12 minutes a day of meditation can give you immediate benefits. If you are unsure where to begin in regards to following this Pillar, consider this book to help you start meditating. Record the changes happening within and without in your journal entry. Each day you complete this Pillar counts as 1 hour toward your goal of becoming an FP-Master.

Mindfulness isn't difficult, we just need to remember to do it - Sharon Salzberg.

Pillar 4 - Compassionate Heart

Smiling at a stranger, saying good morning, or showing good manners are very simple actions we can take that have a positive effect on others. It is often such simple gestures that improve our day and others. Serving food, giving time at charitable events, helping family or friends in need are also simple things that can be done. The opportunities to go beyond yourself are practically limitless. Detail your successes in your journal. Take a few minutes out of each day to put others first. You will soon realize that by stepping back for others, you are only increasing the calm within yourself. Each day you complete this Pillar counts as 1 hour toward your goal of becoming an FP-Master.

Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see - Mark Twain.

Pillar 5 - Writing Your Story

Now is the time, the best time, to record your efforts on a new path that is hopefully opening your mind and challenging you in a new way of life. Detail and write about your journey following The Five Pillars. Feel free to write anything else that comes into your head at the time you make your official entry. It is highly unlikely you will revisit these past events you have recorded and wish they were not so lengthy, or too detailed. This is a personal journey for you but one that has powerful implications for the life you wish to lead. Document the steps, successes and trials you experienced. This Pillar could be the section you write the least about (if you have already detailed the First Four Pillars properly) or it could be your most lengthy. It is up to each person to decide what they are willing to share with the world. Each day you complete this Pillar counts as 1 hour toward your goal of becoming an FP-Master. You also have the option of writing just 1 journal entry, weekly, that covers all your activity from following the Pillars the previous week. This will count for 7 hours.

These handwritten words in the pages of my journal confirm that from an early age I have experienced each encounter in my life twice: once in the world, and once again on the page - Terry Tempest Williams.

Progression on the Path

As briefly mentioned on the Home Page, humans love accomplishments. We love to see what we have achieved and hang it on our wall or wear it on our clothes. But since this site is not economically-driven or has any kind of entrepreneurial spirit, you will have to be satisfied with recognition on this website only. The real goal is for your lives to change for the better and discover/create your own purpose as you learn and grow following The Five Pillars. With that being said, the milestones below will lead you to FP-Mastery in the Art of Living. According to your wishes, you may email fivepillarsfounder@gmail.com when you complete the milestones below to have your name and state/country added to the Library page.

FP-Student:

FP-Initiate:

FP-Apprentice:

FP-Artisan:

FP-Knight:

FP-Master:

FP-Grand Master:

To save you a little math, if you completed 5 Pillars a day for 7 days a week consistently for 1 full year, you would have completed 1,820 hours in one year. As you no doubt concluded, becoming an FP-Master at the Art of Living will take several years to achieve. But hopefully, after years of following these Pillars, the new life found by living the Pillars becomes its own reward far beyond an achievement earned here. Happy living.
